Two new acquisitions

I've been a bit short of VMC acquisitions of late; in part that's been because I've not been so into reading my way through so many VMCs at the moment, but mainly that's because I've cut down on book buying generally.

But thanks to the kindness of two fellow VMC fans, I have acquired 2 new titles in the last week.

Firstly, Cate, who I know through the librarything VMC group, sent me The house of mirth by Edith Wharton - this is one of those books that I know I really ought to have read. And as such will certainly now be reading it.

Secondly, Claire, from the Paperback Reader blog, kindly parted with her copy of Ann Veronica by HG Wells - this intrigues me as although I've never read any Wells I associate him with science fiction rather than women's writing! I have started reading this so it will probably be my next VVV review.
Thank you ladies!!

  2. How kind of Claire and Cate! The House of Mirth is a terrific book and Ann Veronica is also very good, though I found the main character a trifle irritating after a while!

  3. I love Edith Wharton! I haven't read this one, though...
HG Wells wrote Kipps, didn't he? You may (depending on your age!) remember that it was filmed as 'Half a Sixpence', with Tommy Steel. I enjoyed that (the book) so am looking forward to reading your review on Ann Veronica.

  4. Claire - I shall write about it this week.

Rachel - I am finding her a little annoying too.

Penny - I'm only 26 and I don't remember it I'm afraid... Will probably read the Edith Wharton over the weekend.

  8. Verity, HoM is one of my favourite novels of all-time. I really hope you enjoy it, too. That picture, by the way, is in the National Portrait Gallery - very stunning it is, too.

  9. Vintage Reading - thank you!

I have finished reading Ann Veronica but am unlikely to have time to review it soon, but I will do! I enjoyed it Claire and am happy to pass it back to you if you like.

  11. The House of Mirth is one of my favorite novels. So much so that, when I recommended it to a friend and she didn't like it, my first thought was not "what a shame" but "what is wrong with her??"

...and now I've just realized I've left no polite way to ask if you like it. I'll just wait for your post. :)
